All you East Malaysians are spoilt regards booze. I have learned that, if going to KK its much cheaper to fly to Labuan, get booze for the stay, high speed RM34 ferry to KK and on the way back via Labuan seriously stock up as nobody cares about volume in Labuan and at LCCT in KL nobody could check which plane you got off anyway!!

Time wise by air. Labuan is almost as close to KL as the other 2 and its a lot cheaper O0

You can sail there is a day and fill up. It would take me2 days 1 night in my little cat...one way.

Hi Jac

Decent kitchen appliances are from my own research more expensive here in Malaysia, for example decent brand washer dryers and integrated kitchen stuff. People that say its cheaper here in Malaysia for those items, are not comparing like for like.

Cheapest front loading washer/dryer I have ever seen in Malaysia was an Electrolux at 2800rm, that converts to about £580, washer dryer in the UK can be purchased from under £300 at Dixons.co.uk.

Example (as Bsoch is sold in Malaysia)
BOSCH Exxcel WVD2452BGB Washer Dryer - Black £516 (under 2500rm)
try finding any make washer/dryer in Malaysia for that price, let alone Bosch!
BOSCH Exxcel WVD2452BGB Washer Dryer - Black

I have had extensive discusssions with many forum members about higher quality branded items, and we ALL come to the same conclusion. My advice would be to check the price online wherever you are then do the same in Malaysia. If you have any specific make/model in mind then let me know and I'll find out what I can. With regards to the curtains, decent quality Jaquard heavyweight lined curtains were a lot cheaper for us to buy in the UK. this all depends on what quality you are used to. In my case only the best will do ;)

Hi Breathless

Thanks for the info regarding HDMI cables, I have only looked at places such as Harvey Norman at 'Monster' cables and they seem to be 500rm+ whereas I have seen them in the UK in a place called Argos for under £30 (For Monster branded). I suppose it all depends on whether the cable is a 1.1 or 1.2 or 1.3 or 1.3a or 1.4??? All double Dutch to me!

Come on everyone, lete save all those people coming to live in Malaysia enough money so they can take us all out for a Slap up meal ;)

We must be lucky as our local Tesco Extra on Jln Ipoh (Selayang) has a pretty wide range of just about everything, bulk catering, TV's , DIY stuff, gardening etc. ...but NO VEGIMITE.

Second rate stuff Tink.  You need the real thing - MARMITE  :D  ;)  Hope you've got Marmite down there in Penang.

I'm getting very depressed about all the comments saying that Tesco in Thailand is better than Tesco in Malaysia, 'cause we think the Tescos in Phuket are lousy.  So this doesn't bode well for Penang Tescos.  Ah well, just as well I like Cold Storage.

Can one buy Miele products in Malaysia? It appears Bosch is available, what about AEG? I am looking at it from parts/servicing angle when the bought in products breakdown.

You can get European brands if you want to pay for them. 15 years here in the 70's and 80's taught me to buy what Malaysians buy. That is Japanese or Korean (these days made in China anyway) and at a fraction of the price. On the very rare occasion it needs looking at, any local shop can do it and parts readily available. Your in the east now and it doesn't hurt to think like the east at times!! I have Japanese, refrigerator, washing machine, (don't need a dryer..sun is good), kettle...but bring a fan as they are horribly expensive here.

High quality stainless steel cutlery from David Jones!
Vue cotton sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases.
Kitchen cleaning agents.
Glass rubber wiper (I have already broke 2 that I bought here at Jusco!). Made in China cheap crap!
Maybe a Dyson vacuum cleaner (if I can smuggle in one without getting ask by custom).
Lots of homeware and decoration stuffs. So hard to find nice, beautiful things to decorate the rooms here. Otherwise, good options to shop in Bangkok or KL .

Don't worry about the circulating of air, just leave a gap at the top and it will blow through!  ::)
