Weights & Measures & Consumer Protection in Malaysia
« on: June 29, 2010, 12:24:54 PM »
Recently I drove into a petrol station, and whilst there wasn't much fuel in the tank it certainly was not empty!

I then proceeded to pump 75.3 litres of fuel into my vehicle.

The vehicle handbook states 'Tank Capacity 71 litres'
I have had the car 6 years, and frequently in the past have run it to practically the last few cc's before refueling, and try as I might I have never succeeded in pumping more than 72.5 litre to brimming full.

So how does 75.3 litres into a not quite empty tank work?? That's an overage by almost 10%

Is there a body one can complain to in Malaysia, or is it a case of the relevant Govt Weights & Measure dept being in cahoots with the Station owner, and they share the spoils so tough luck!! :(

I must say if you never let your tank get anyway near empty, and you just 'top up' with RM50 every now and again, you would never become aware of a scam like this! ::)
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

I'd first complain to the Station owner.
He may have an explanation for this - or realise that his instruments are badly set.

Otherwise, I'd report it to the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (MDTCC)

Thanks Jack.

I already did that but the Pump Station manager stated that the pumps were all calibrated at the end of last year by the relevant Govt Agency....so what can you say!

She kept asking me how much fuel was in the tank before I started filling!!!!!!  She didn't seem to realise that any amount was only going to make the end result even worse!!

I had already 'googled' that website, it is a 'busy' page'. I cannot find anything that looks like you could lodge a complaint on it!

It does however advise <Write to the local officials and to consumer organizations if you are aware of dynamite fishing or illegal logging being committed in your area.> ???

I for one would be very interested to know the station and address for reference so that I make sure to avoid it. There may be just the smallest chance that the fuel company supplier may be interested as well.

Hi Tink,
For the record it was Hanz Jaya Enterprise, Jn Kajang Semenyih, Not far from Kajang Golf Club, outside KL.

I suspect this kind of scam is quite common ant many filling stations, but would be very hard to detect in the normal course of event! ::) ::)
