Intensive Melayu Language Course for Foreigners
« on: June 27, 2010, 03:04:17 AM »
Does anyone know of any private or university-affiliated institution that offers intensive short (e.g. 20 hr/wk, 3-5 weeks) courses to teach Melayu to foreigners? (I've seen the learning the language and Bahasa Melayu threads, but I had something more formal in mind.) Thanks.

At one time the Universiti Malaya (Pusat Bahasa) had a six-week (120 hour) intensive course for Malay.  There were three levels, but it would take 3 years to do the sequence if you only wanted the six-week course.  There were also 9-month sessions that were only 5 hours per week.  I did this back in the mid 1990s, but only Level 1.  I heard that it has since been discontinued, but one could always check.

The Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) began to offer intensive Malay classes.  I know several people (Koreans, mostly) who took these classes.  You could always check this one out, they do give student visas for this course.

Thanks! I'll see if I can check these out online. (I assume I can enroll for these on an MM2H visa, and a student visa wouldn't be required?)

Yes, I think that a retirement visa, under MM2H, trumps all other visas.
