I have been to one of the wine tastings a couple of months ago and to be honest I wasn't overwhelmed. I found the wines pricey and the food served with the tasting was nothing special.

Another IMHO nicer wine bar can be found on Lintang Burmah and is called the Wine Shop. It's in 2 shop houses next to each other, one is the bar the other the shop. During the day you can buy wine to take home at decent prizes, at night they close the front door of the shop but you can still walk in trough the bar area and pick a wine. I like going trough the bottle's and reading the wraps on the bottle, it beats a printed wine list. They also serve food.

Oh, and of course they have a facebook page too :)

Very interesting.  A pity that the Wine Shop doesn't put any price lists or food lists on their facebook page or website - at least I couldn't find it.

That Little Wine Bar had a full price menu on the website - glass of house white or house red RM 20 - eeeek  :(  I think they charge just RM 10 at Blue Reef eatery?  Think I know which one I might prefer.

Hi Papaya

Why am I not surprised that you respond :)

A couple of weeks ago we had a very nice Marlborough Sauvignon blanc, Saint Claire.
That one was 80 RM a bottle at the bar. Others we had were Mussel Bay and Fire road all
New Zealand wines and all 80-90 RM. They are cheaper if you take them home.

Oy what are you suggesting?  ~2~

I dunno, RM 80 still sounds like a lot of money to me though I'm sure that's real good quality stuff.  Well I'd drink that if someone else was paying.

Maybe I've just got used to being a cheapskate after a few years in Phuket.  I've just calculated back to Sterling as a point of reference, as I seem to recall when we were living in Singapore we were paying something like equiv GBP 7 for a half decent bottle on special offer in Cold Storage and we used to think that was expensive, but got used to it.  So that's about equiv RM 34 - I think that would be about my benchmark for a bottle of wine to drink at home.  Sure, you've got to pay a bit more when you're drinking out.

What about all our Aussie posters on here - would you pay RM 80 for a bottle of wine?  That's about AUD 28.40 approx.

hi,

Totally off the Penang aspect of this topic but when I was in Portugal in 1984 a bottle of plonk cost about 100 escudos (I can't remember exactly but it's not the point) and there were 240 escudos to 1 GBP. After 1 week in the digs the bottles filled the small kitchenette so I took them to dump at the local supermarket. I got about 60 escudos back per bottle. I was so impressed I decided that Portugal was the next move.

That's how the whole Portugal saga started.

Thanks Sananton, I've bookmarked that - free delivery if you buy a few bottles, that's interesting.  I see they've got a couple of bottles at RM 16 - yeeech, I bet they're not fine wines, he he.  I'm a cheapskate, but not that cheapskate.  I paid more than that for one glass of wine at a Batu Ferringhi food court - though they did reduce the price after a lot of moaning.  It pays to moan sometimes.

Agree with you Stuurman, you get what you pay for in life, for sure, and once in a while it's nice to splurge out.  It all depends on your disposable income as well, in these troubled times.  Don't forget I'm a poor old retired lady  :'(  ;)  I'm just wondering what reaction I'd get from Mr P if I ordered a bottle of wine for RM 80 - I don't like to think about it.

They are only 18.7CL, so maybe it's quality over quantity :)

Offer him a glass it might lead to unexpected results.

I get to That Little Wine Bar regularly, (perhaps not as regularly as Louise and Tommes would like but often enough that they know me. It helps that I am only 2 streets away and can walk there and stumble home.

On the wine front, the supermarkets do good specials on Australian wines, 30 to 40RM a bottle for the specials gives me a good middle of the range drink that is red and wet. TLWB I could say is for more refined palates perhaps than mine. They have a range of wines from something a bottle up to 1200RM a bottle mostly from Europe.

16RM Papaya... what are you drinking? It sounds like paint stripper.

Steve, a bit off topic.  Your blog is great with many updates that come with photos on what's happening in Penang.  I can see your passion about Penang.  Keep up the good job! O0 O0

Cheers!

Hate people who reminisce about the old days....but I remember the late 60's I used to get 18 imp gal of claret on oak from De Bortoli at Griffith for A$21 and shared by 6 of us. 108 bottles and 6 headaches at the bottling party...them good old days...sigh.
