Kaki means mate as in a clique, gang, group, such as mahjong kaki.

BTW, I play mahjong. Picked it up in London in the 70's. Totally knock-out game. Anyone else a fan?

Yes yes. We're so desperate for mahjong kakis that we taught our kids! They love it too. And I even know how to score the game. (Even the Chinese are impressed when I tell 'em that one! Nyuk nyuk.)

That's marvellous, and what a great way to get the pocket money back.   

I can also score but I learnt a fast Hong Kong version that means the payouts are settled super fast so that the game can continue toot sweet. 4 hour sessions were the evening norm stretching to 5 or 6 hours on weekends. IMO, the most challenging game in the world, and no physical exercise. Made to the measure of man.
