Hi PakMike
is it that the HSBC cards just do not work or is it that you have to pay a fee. Amazing. ??? In Oz your ATM card works in every bank as it does in malaysia (and everywhere else in the world)  but at banks other than the issuer you pay a fee.
Cheers :)

You can use your Malaysian ATM card abroad as well as at any ATM in Malaysia.

I thought it was a RM10 charge if you use it at a Maybank ATM, just as an example (and they are probably the most common ATMs around.

Why can't it be like Thailand where there is an ATM every 100 or so meters, and you can use anyone without charge???
The trouble with taking the ‘middle of the road’ position is that you get run over from both directions.

Does not work. Same applies with our Malaysian Standard Chartered ATM card. It seems that the foreign banks in Malaysia don't have arrangements with local banks for ATM use. Is a real pain, and was quite surprised when I discovered this.

I am going to HSBC again today, so will check out exactly the situation. Like to know also what they mean by "Outside Banks"

Will report back.

Back from HSBC Penang.

Latest is that for using 3 (only) other banks ATM machines, one of which is Standard Chartered (can't remember the others) the charge is One Ringet.

For all other Malaysian Banks, the charge is 10 Ringet. I have no idea if this is correct, but it is what I was told. Worth a try anyway if you can't find an HSBC ATM near by.

I hate to tell you this, but some Thai banks this year have started charging for different ATM cards.  I can't recall exactly which ones but I know we put an ATM card in one machine and it told us they were going to make a charge.  At least they tell you first though so you can reject the transaction if you like.

Can't say I am surprised. In fact I was always surprised that there never was a charge. My Thai Bank is Std Chartered, and branches (never mind ATMs) are very rare indeed in Thailand!!

hi,

CIMB charges RM8 per year for it's ATM card. This charge is made irrespective of actually using the card. CIMB told me today that other banks charge RM10.

I went there to complain about their lousy internet procedures but gave up when the guy at the front desk recognised me and gave me a priority number. There were about 8 other waiting customers. I got served first so I thought . . . oh well . . . just keep mum and don't use CIMB clicks.    :'(

I think that I'll get a Maybank online set-up and test it out.

Hi.

On a recent visit to Malaysia (April 2010) I tried to open a account with HSBC in Malacca.

I was going to use a friends Malaysian address for the account

I was asked if I had a work permit or MM2H visit, I have nether,  when I said so, the lady was very polite but said I could not open a account
as a foreigner with out a MM2H visa or a work permit.

Might try a different bank next time we are back in Malaysia.

Hi Col

I was a visitor like you and  in April 2010 I had the same problem with several banks. However, Hong Leong Bank allowed me to open 2 bank accounts.

cheers
