hi, Siskin,

It's like Penang without everything. Including foreigners.

The really big news a few years ago in my part of Perak was the opening of Giant supermarket. I prefer the Tesco in Ipoh but it's a 2 hour ++ drive away. I can reach a Watson's and a Guardian in 30 minutes.

Soon, and this is totally awesome, a Tesco is opening within 20 minutes of me.

The local cinema got a make-over last year but it's still grotty. I think the screen is a blanket, it's definitely furry and it made Harry Potter look textured, and sepia coloured.

Err . . . what else. Easy-going, doesn't cost a lot to live here, loads of food outlets so McDonalds (1 outlet arrived 2006) and KFC (2 outlets always been around) seem like expensive special treats.

You'll need to locate some decent beaches. Pangkor Island takes 1 hour to ride around on a hired motorbike and it's a lovely place.

Hi Siskin

Perak is a pretty large state. The coastline is not easily accessible except by boat. A couple of towns which you may like to check out are Teluk Intan and Bagan Datoh, a quaint fishing village approximately 2-1/2 hours' drive from Kuala Lumpur. Other villages you may like to check out are Lumut and Pangkor island............which is more of a beach resort now. It used to be a quaint and quiet island where locals used to visit on a Sunday for a picnic.  :)
