The Road from Gerik to Jeli
« on: July 10, 2010, 02:54:53 PM »
Hi
on my recent trip to Malaysia I spent some time travelling the back roads around Butterworth. It has whet my appetite for a round Malaysia odyssey by the lesser roads.
Has anyone travelled the road from Gerik to Jeli and beyond to the east coast.
Look forward to hearing of your adventures  :) :)

Yep, we did the run via these places from Penang to the East Coast. Quite a long drive, took us about 9-10 hours, and across the mountains is very scenic and quite isolated. A very long climb up to quite a height, then down the other side through unspoilt rainforest.

Only negative for me (the driver) were the crazy drivers on these steep and twisty mountain roads which are VERY dangerous. Overtaking on blind bends is no issue for these guys, so we had to avoid a few potential head-ons. Along the way saw two very large lorries that had run out of control and landed on their sides.... probably killing the drivers in both cases. Along some parts of the road the barriers have been constantly crashed as vehicles  have overshot corners etc.

If you love driving on these roads, would be a must do..... but for me who has no great love of driving anymore, will probably not do it again.

I agree its the drivers who make it a bit hair raising. If you like back roads and east coast, I will be dragging a boat trailer from Cukai to Lumut the hard way end of the month. There is an unopened highway hugs the northern shore of Lake Kenyir and meets up with Felda roads to route 8 on into Gua Musang, up over Cameron Highlands and down the hill to Lumut. A friend will show us a good camp site and where the elephant rehab is on the way. Will let everyone know when/if we make it back!! I'm told the scenery is spectacular.

Ha ha ;) you guessed it. O0

I thought, the Boss uses a boat and I should do something else, so a family crest that nobody has any idea about was as good as anything!! Actually you tell by the single chevron it denotes a "common knight" A knight commoner....or something like that. Actually I have a friend, also MM2H who has his crest on his "calling card". The expression on faces is immediatly "How can I get one of those" ::)
