~2~ Boiled spud/potato now your talking set in middle of good big bowl of thick soup and a slice of wheaten bread feast for a prince, as for the boiled peanuts to me something missing perhaps dash of chilly sauce. Hieu I see a shop in central London selling Ban Mi at £3 each my favourite street seller in Ho will do 4-5 for £1. Anybody not been to Viet Nam Ban Mi is baguette with Pattie sliced pork vegies and chilly or soy sauce to your taste.

Is not the King of Fruits in Malaysia Durian? Have you tried that?

Edit: Oops. I've now read through the earlier posts. For the record Yes/not keen.

It is like eating cream cheese strained through dirty smelly sport socks and then eaten out of old sandshoes.

I just love this nasty fruit though not like some who'd eat daily. Max 2-3 fruits per season and mainly the Balik Pulau Penang durian. I'm the only one in the family who like it. In Canada I once bought a frozen one from the supermarket and hung it in the garage for defrosting in winter. My kids came home from school thinking I forgot to take the garbage out that week!
MrBB and the kids like  the freshly deep fried smelly bean curds in HK and Taiwan. Just can't find any in Pg for him  :(
Then there'll be peace for when I eat the durian he can enjoy the smelly bean curds  ;)

Pleasure and revulsion in one bite, what an odd experience.

Had some recently in Penang and wasnt sure what to make of it between feeling like I was eating the sweetest thing , the strongest cheese and throwing up.

No better on the second bite either, so gave it away to a beer girl.

I still remember the first time we discovered Penang thinking that the open sewers were prettty foul smelling in certain areas, and much later discovering it was the durian.

I saw a packet freshly packed in the morning at Jusco supermarket. So, thought I will take the courage and buy one home to try. After all the last time I had it, which was once only, was when I was a little boy. I was told that I am not Penang born because I really find the fruit disgusting! Anyway, I took the courage and told myself I had to try at least 2 pieces to recall my memory on the taste, texture, smell. Boy! Did I asked for it! Strange. Very strange indeed. A cross between something really pungent, mushy, gluey, sweet that lingers on in your mouth for so long that I need to gurgle Listerine at least a dozen times!  ~44~

My friend from the UK would eat by the road side before heading home. Don't think her hubby appreciates the pungent smell in the house.
I'd eat on the porch and get rid of the shells and seeds right away in the garbage cabinet by the gate. Our garbage days are Tues, Thurs and Sat mornings and I make sure if I eat that will be Mon, Wed and Fri.
MrBB tried it once the very first time he came to Pg. Had a bite and that's it. He's ok with the smell to some degree, but he felt like he was eating a big rotten soft onion  :)
