Has Anyone Tried "King of Fruits" Before?
« on: April 24, 2010, 04:39:02 PM »
Just read the online news from The Star on "Villa Fit for King of Fruits".

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/4/24/north/6121883&sec=North

Wondering if anyone of you has ever tried Durian before?  Like it or not?  Share with us your experience?

May - June is usually the time to head to the western part of the island to sample durians, but in a different way this year - overnight at a hilltop villa overlooking flourishingly green countryside below and stars above at night!!

I tried it on one of my first visits to Malaysia over 10 years ago. Taste was ok but I found it a bit sickly for my liking. Never really been struck on it. Its pungent smell is another thing. I was in a supermarket once and thought there was a gas leak until I realised they were selling Durian.

When I was flying for an airline I used to do a cargo flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong with a B707 full of that so-called fruit.
We had to have our oxygen masks on the whole flight...the smell was indeed pungent.
We requested an extra flight allowance to have our uniforms cleaned...they offered a free box of Durian.  :D

Consequently, every time I pass a fruit stall during Durian season I almost throw up.

hi,

I can tell you, put a durian in the car boot and you're smelling it for weeks. And why not, it's rotting that's what causes the smell.

I think that it has a clammy, pasty taste and smells like old socks, and if you eat 2 or 3 you'll get stomach cramps. At least we all did one evening on Koh Samui when 4 of us cleared off 12 durian. Bloated, unable to move and living with the stench. It started off as a good after dinner idea.   :-\   Never again.

Still, many of my Chinese and Thai friends think that cheese is rotten. And that it's sticky and has a clammy taste, and a unpleasant pungent smell.

Well known saying, "a packet of cheese is easier to open than a durian."

I supposed those who have been in Asia for decades like Scott and Davita could have well accepted the pungent smell of durian and got used to eating it.  My hypothesis then proves to be wrong.  LOL!!!! ~44~ ~44~

The durians you ate must be coming from Thailand.  Try Penang's durians next time and you will know the difference. :) :)

I first tried durian in Vietnam about 12 years ago and have loved it every since. I worked in the pathology department of a large hospital in the US and brought one to work with me for my colleagues to sample. No one liked it. People actually thought some surgical specimens had decomposed. I had to dispose of the remainder of the durian in a biohazard bag to be incenerated.

I love it.  So far, I can polish off a few durians all by myself and not suffering any negative consequences.  Only positive ones: contentment, peace, happiness, joy...  :D  When I was in Singapore this past March, durians were not in season.  However, there were some durians available from JB.  Apparently these durian trees have fruits a few months earlier than the rest.  My niece bought one for us.  There were about 11 "seeds" in this small durian.  The price?  $S20!  Or approximately $S2 per seed.  That girl really loves her favorite uncle  ~2~  Speaking of durian and cheese,  I have never been able to like certain cheeses, such as Limberger.  However, I have decided to not cultivate my taste for exotic food.  Costs too much once I start liking them  ~38~

If you were born and raised in Penang, you will love durian. If you don't, then you are not from Penang! That is what I have always been told! Damn it. That means, I am not from a Penang (but, I am). In Hokkien, they will say, "Aiyoh! You from Penang and don't know how to eat durian..." "...shame on you!"

Yes, the "stones" or "seeds" of many fruits are boiled to eat.  It's just a large "nut."  One of my favorites is boiled jackfruit seeds/stones.  A little bit like boiled peanuts or potatoes...
