Happy New Year
« on: December 31, 2009, 04:38:20 PM »
and a happy new decade - hopefully the decade that I will be moving

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne.

And surely you'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine,
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

Chorus

We twa hae ran about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd monie a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

Chorus

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun til dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

Chorus

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o' thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught
For auld lang syne!

Chorus

Meaning of unusual words:
Auld lang syne = Former days and friends
jo = dear
stowp = tankard
gowans = daisies
braid = broad
Guid-willie waught = friendly draught

Here is the "translation" into modern English. There is no doubt that Burns did it better!

Days Long Ago
Should old acquaintances be forgotten
And never be remembered?
Should old acquaintances be forgotten
and days long ago.

Chorus:
For days long ago, my dear,
For days long ago
We'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For days long ago!

And surely you'll have your pint tankard
And surely I'll have mine.
And we'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For days long ago.

Chorus

We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine
But we've wandered many a weary mile
Since the days long ago.

Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream
From morning sun till dinner-time
But the broad seas have roared between us
Since the days long ago.

Chorus

And here's my hand, my trusty friend,
And give me your hand too,
And we will take an excellent good-will drink
For the days of long ago.

Cheers JJ

And a happy hogmanay to you too - and thanks for the English translation  ;D  Hope you're not too cold over there - I was just reading about it being minus 16 C in Scotland recently (if that is where you are).

New decade - I hadn't thought of that, though of course here in Thailand it is not - as it will be year 2553 tomorrow  ::)

Hope you manage to move in the next decade JJ.  We shall move next year for sure and that really cheers me.

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm somewhat digressing but we're probably the only 2 posters on here at the moment (I guess they'll be getting the drinkies out already in Malaysia which is an hour ahead of me) but I was up your way some years ago, when I was working, and stayed at a hotel in Dyce I think near Aberdeen and the food produce.... wow - really fabulous steaks, cullen skink - very, very nice - but a little bit cold  :-\

Thanks for the google map and the song JJ. Brought back memories.

I was born just a bit south of you, in Dundee. Left in 1952 to join the RAF and never went back. The economy in those days...prior to finding oil...was terrible, and my whole family eventually left for London to find work.
My sibling family all talked with a South London accent and couldn't understand mine.
I went to the Morgan Academy and recently found it was burned done...nothing to do with me... but I still have memories of getting strapped often and wishing it would and the Teacher with it.

Currently in Jakarta and about to go to a Jazz Lounge and get plenty soused for the New Year in under 5 hours.

Happy New Year to everyone on the Forum.

We will be in KL on 12th Jan to process our MM2H and then to Penang/Langkawi to look around.
Not been there since I was stationed in RAF Butterworth in the late '50's.

Ah yes Dundee

The place with the most confusing road system for outsiders

Stick to the Jazz bar mate - I envy you.

My father was a RAF policeman for 22 years - never made it to Malaysia though

Well your not exactly a million miles away from Malaysia and you seem pretty downbeat about the whole thing anyway

I can not understand whey you have not visited yourself especially after the sort of questions you have asked.  You could have then opened the account in person and solved all the BKK  hassles looked around and then decided if you wanted to apply

 ???

Cheers

JJ

Actually, I'm feeling pretty upbeat about visiting Malaysia recently and collecting my Social Visit Pass.

hopefully the decade that I will be moving

Awesome forward planning.  I bet you are counting the days, eh?

hi, feebee,

Congrats on the visa. Any problems? Any magical events? Or was it just in, out, and thanks?

Ta.

The only problems were the techie difficulties that I posted recently in the thread "cellphone roaming".

Malaysia is fine.  Clean, civilised, and I think a more advanced country than Thailand.

It was a great luxury having no language difficulty.
