Issues arising from passport renewal
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:28:18 PM »
Hi Everyone,

As part of my DIY application, together with other papers I had submitted copies of my passport pages (all, including blank pages), on the basis of which I received a Conditional Letter of Approval [CLA]. Since then, (1) new visas and exit and entry stamps have been placed in my passport; and (2) I have renewed my passport.

Question: When I go to get the visa endorsed, should I take with me:
  • a fresh photocopy of the changed (or of all) pages of my old passport? and/or
  • a photocopy of just the identification pages, or of all pages, of my new passport?
Does anyone have experience of what happens in these circumstances when you go to get your visa? Grateful for any advice.

In fact, although this is discussed in different contexts elsewhere on this forum (especially under Renewals & Extensions), I wonder if it might be useful to share experiences on issues arising from passport renewal:
  • Before receipt of CLA (as is the case with my wife);
  • After receipt of CLA but before endorsement of visa; and
  • After visa endorsement.

By way of closure, to answer my own question: following advice from a usually reliable source, when we went in to pick up our MM2H visa, I handed in a letter addressed to the Immigration Unit, with the usual reference numbers at the top, along the following lines:

Quote
This is with reference to your Conditional Letter of Approval, dated ..., addressed to:
NAMES & PASSPORT NOS. (exactly as they appear on the CLA)

This is to inform you that we have obtained fresh passports, so that our current passport numbers are as follows:
NAMES & NEW PASSPORT NOS. (in the same format as on the CLA)

I attach photocopies of the personal identification pages of both the new passports to this letter, for your files.

Along with all the other required documents, we handed in this letter (and our old and new passports), explaining the circumstances, and obtained our MM2H visa on our new passports, two weeks ago, without any questions, queries, or problems.

(Thank you, Scott, for your advice against getting the photocopies of new passports notarised. On the off chance that they might be useful and by way of closure, I'll try to post one or two other anecdotal accounts of my experience, hopefully in the right thread.)
