Green Cafe Penang
« on: August 10, 2007, 12:32:09 AM »
hi, all,

Qjumper posted to ask if anyone had any information on the Penang Green Cafe information service. If anyone has, please post.

I can only remember a sort of Green Cafe the last time I was in Penang, which was a few years ago. It was a very rustic place. It had numerous country booklets for customers to leave their comments about their travels. I glanced through a few of these whilst waiting for the food. The comments were mainly warnings (don't go here, beware of there) and the food was OK.

Maybe this is the same place?

regards, Scott

It's the Green House on Muntri St. operated by an Ozzie couple. I was told they sell some Ozzie food like some yummy deserts, soup,Veggiemite.... I've received mix reports .... have never been there myself.

Scott,

Thanks for tidying the threads. I am afraid I was one of the offenders.

I wonder if Pat and Alan Jones (Green Cafe) know about this site. They would seem to be a good source of information on living in Malaysia and I am sure they could contribute a lot. Perhaps one of our Penang posters could drop in and let them know.

They could even post an Australian recipe, Drongo stew or something like that.

My apologies to the Aussies but I cant resist having a go at the old colonials.

Yes the Green Cafe is on Muntri Street, close to the corner with Penang Rd. Muntri St is parallel to Chulia St and is at the eastern end of Penang Rd, towards the water.

They sell good tucker, and are very helpful interms of giving info on MM2H.  The deal is they were allowed to run a business (more a retirement hobby lifestyle thing I suspect) in return for providing this service ie acting as an information centre for MM2H.  The story (as Pat tells it) they met the minister on immigration (or tourism) at some function, and were discussing pros and cons of the MM2H application process, how difficult it is for foreigners to find out the facts etc, and it developed into them being allowed to run this business if they would assist in this way....  somehting like that.

Its worth a visit, even those from the motherland would enjoy a bit of aussie 'culture'!   Unfortunately I am working in Jakarta and only get home for short visits every now and then, so havent had time to visit the Green Cafe lately. someone should tell them to log on and put the story straight.

Hi Tombo

I thought we hadnt heard from you for a while.

I must go in to the Green Cafe on my next trip to check out the makanan, I'll have a word with Pat as you suggest.

As I hadnt had any replies to my post I was beginning to think that the Aussies had taken offence. I know what delicate blooms they are from my time attached to the RAAF base at Butterworth.

I must admit that they always dined better than us Brits and I look forward to the odd grilled steelhead and a bit of damper.

Regards

Bob

Hi Bob

A few aussie airforce types (no handlebar moustaches so you can tell they're not british) based at Butterworth staying in the appartment where we are near Gurney in Penang.

By the way last weekend in Penang discovered the E&O Hotel all you can eat Buffet for RM34 with desserts to die for and the best fish I've had almost ever (Bondi Beach Fish n Chips is not bad either).  E&O is sister to Raffles in Singapore, quite elegant, good location on the water.  So MM2Hers get yourself down to Sunday Buffet at E&On for a good feed.

cheers

Tombo

Hi Tombo,

If they are currently "live" then I wouldn't know them as I left a long time ago. If they have been "deactivated" then we may have some mates in common. I only knew penquins (all flap and no fly). Mostly from the base and 4 RAAF hozzie.

I had heard about the E&O but was told it was expensive. For RM34 we will give it a try. I went in there once and it looked a fine place. May be we could get a discount for being MM2hers!

We really must have better word than MM2hers, answers please on a postcard.....

I'm sure that the Malaysian Food Standards people would be impressed, I have my doubts about Mintour.
