Asian Values Western Dreams
« on: March 31, 2010, 02:25:11 PM »
Hi

Has anyone read this book "Asian Values Western Dreams" by Greg Sheridan? If you have not and you are a mat salleh planning to move to live in Asia/Malaysia, I would recommend this book to you.

Chapter 5 is about Malaysia. Unfortunately, this book was published in 1999 - needless to say a bit long in the tooth.  :) If you have read it, care to share your thoughts?

Hey Cupert, is that Greg Sheridan the one-time Foreign Affairs Editor of The Australian newspaper? Haven't read the book but, if it's the same personage, and if his columns were anything to go by, I'd say he was a bit hit and miss.

Well, I'm going by my opinion formed over years of reading him at The Australian. In some things, he was spot on; in others, I thought he was quite well off the mark and marching to the beat of his own inner agenda. It's years on now, so I can't give any specifics, but I have an opinion of him as 50-50. Then again, I am a left-wing commie, so perhaps that had something to do with it.  :D

Kaz!

PS This is particularly interesting as my father used to kill communists along the Malaysian-Thai border.

Well Kaz...you could always visit with Chin Peng (The leader of the Malay Communist Party) who committed many atrocities on the Malays. He lectures on Communism.

He currently lives in exile in Thailand but wants to return to his home in Ipoh. He is in his mid 80's. The Government refuse to permit his return, even though he was considered a hero during the war with the Japanese.

Your dad probably regrets not getting him.

My father, an Ipoh boy himself, used to lead a lot of those kill teams. I'm sure he IS sorry he missed Chin Peng, David! Would have been a left ear I'm sure he would have been proud framing! LOL
