Has the south-west monsoon started early?
« on: March 30, 2010, 05:54:07 PM »
Up in the northern province of Bukit, we've had two big evening downpours the last couple of nights.  I just saw on the Georgetown newsfeed on Facebook that there's heavy rains started about an hour ago.  I guess it will reach us pretty soon.  Early monsoon??

Hi Papaya

Don't know about early onset of monsoon in Bukit and GT but in Oz, more like the outskirt of Sydney, there was a downpour late yesterday evening which resulted in power failure in some streets. More rain today and perhaps all of this week.

Muffin, my dog is not happy as we couldn't go for a walk today. Perhaps I can pick up a doggy rainjacket for her at the pet shop and with an umbrella, we should be fine and dandy.  ~44~

According to brother-in-law this is the pre-monsoon rain or is it the post monsoon?, reminds me of the 3 seasons in M/sia, Hot & Wet, Hot & Dry, and Hot & Humid!. Rob :)

April (and end of March) is the monsoon inter-change from North East to South West, and October is from South West to North East.  So, Penang receives the highest rainfall in these two months.  The difference is in April, you usually get heavy rain and thunderstorm in the midnight or wee hour while in October, it usually rains relentlessly in the daylight.

Yes, April and October are the inter-monsoon months. The heavy downpours are usually not that long but and the winds were so strong 3 days ago! I just love the April inter monsoon storms because they make the evening really nice and cool. If you move in to a new condo or house, this is the time to check out any leaks from faulty workmanship and clogged drainage pipes :)

I can buy those theories but we're still in March, guys.  As I recall, the last couple of years in Phuket, we'd get the evening downpours in mid April, usually after Songkran - Thai NY, then the long serious stuff - 4 days at a time - during May, then pretty much on and off during the summer.  Maybe it's a little bit different up here.

What I have noticed this year is that we've had no rain whatsoever for Jan and Feb and half of March.  Our water supply is "natural" - out of a lagoon basically, and it's been looking like a little puddle the last few weeks - a bit worrying, so the rain is very welcome.
