Next day I received an email requesting me to visit the branch and sign one more form. I did so, and the form I signed was a document stating that I did not have any other money in any other financial institution in Malaysia. I was then given my account number and told, "your account is now active."

What on earth is that about, Jaydee?  We've got our FDs with Maybank but were thinking of opening up "proper" bank accounts with CIMB after we've moved to Penang.  We're aware that CIMB need an address in Penang, with proof - but cannot have money with another bank????  ???

Papaya,

What is it about ? I have no idea. I just abided by the banks request.
No doubt it has something to do with seeking permission for bank switching is my guess, and that's why I mentioned it.
Are there any Bank Johnnies on this forum that can answer the question ???
Cheers & Beers,
JAYDEE

I don't get it either ???
We have a HSBC acc here even before we applied for MM2H and then a CIMB acc later after we got the MM2H and never had to sign a form stating the above  :-\

I have never been asked whether I had money in any other financial institution either.

I was living in the UK and wasn't even aware of MM2H when I opened my first account here. All I took along to open the account was my passport and a letter of introduction from the HSBC back in the UK. I opened a cheque account at HSBC after I moved here but before applying for MM2H.

CIMB’s computer system needs to input “address in Malaysia” when an individual customer opens a/c.   You can ask for the branch manager’s approval to overcome this if you don’t have one.  When I opened mm2h FD a/c, the branch’s address was used to fulfil computer requirement.  CIMB’s staff was very helpful.

I have also had some problems with CIMB's computer system, on 2 occasions. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact details except that the counter staff explained that they couldn't complete the computer screen data as my account was an "external account." It just meant waiting for 1/2 an hour until they made a telephone call to HQ in KL.

The "external account" tag is stamped on the passbook. A mate of mine has a Maybank passbook and that also has "external account" stamped on it.

We didn't need to have a Malaysian address for our FDs at Maybank - they just required sight of our conditional approval letter.

I was looking at CIMB website and for what I call "proper accounts" for want of a better word, i.e. with cheque book etc etc it said they require proof of address - utility bill if I recall correctly.  Of course, in reality I suppose it may be different  ::)
