Hi all,
Does anyone know where (besides Tesco) to buy a sewing machine?  Would like a new one or used in good condition.  Thanks in advance for your help.

The Singer brand is the market leader in Malaysia.  They have more than 250 outlets with showrooms everywhere. I bought mine from the outlet in Damansara Utama.  Never buy sewing machine from hypermarkets or shops not specialising in such product. I suggest you visit their website www.singer.com.my to look at their products and their promotion and then contact them to recommend you the outlet nearest to you. They have a wide range of  models but I would recommend you to look at those costing between RM 600 to RM 900 which have features for most of the sewing needs. They even have training courses on how to use the machine.  I bought mine at RM 850 and it has been with me for the past 5 years without any problem. They have good after sales service centre along the Federal Highway which you can seek technical assistance directly from the principal rather than their outlets.

hi,

Can these sewing machines (say, Singer RM800 ++) handle sail cloth or plastic awning materials. The folks in the awning-maker shops seem to be using the older type of pedal machines.

I believe it can handle this type of sewing mechanically.  I can for see one problem. When you sew such bulky item, how are you going to maneuver the material in order to sew it. I believe you need an industrial machine which is specially designed to ease the passage of the material.  I guess the needle also needs to be robust compared to the one use domestically.

hi, ypchoon,

Many thanks for the reply and comments. I think that I'll take the sail down to the awning shop and see how they can repair it. It could be simpler just to pay them rather than buy a machine.
