Moving to Penang
« on: March 02, 2010, 10:48:12 AM »
Having just got our MM2H Visas we are thinking of moving to Penang to live. I see from the Bulletin Boards that there are plenty of activities and social gatherings which we would enjoy and meet up with other members of the group.

What areas areas are good to live in and I believe the Adventis Hospital is good.

Any advice would be welcome since it is a few years since we were last in Penang.

Hello theold100.  (You're not 100 are you?  :D )  I know which areas I like but everyone has their own tastes.  Visit, hire a car and look around maybe?  Do you want to be near a beach?  near shops?  up in the hillside? in the middle of town? condo or house?  There's a lot of choice.

If you're new to the forum, you might want to browse through the Penang section and there's some property threads too.  It might give you a few ideas, but nothing beats taking a good look yourself.

hi, theold100,

Congrats on getting the mm2h visa and welcome to the site.   8-)

I endorse papaya suggestion. Have a look at the Penang posts, there's plenty to read and lots of information from many members to digest.

Hi Theold100 and welcome to the forum. Your webname sounds like a cavalry regiment at Balaclava  ~24~
I would fascinated to hear about the origin.

We have been in Penang now for about 18 months and thoroughly enjoying being here, its still an amazing place despite lots of building on the north coast.

Enjoy your search for a property here.

Hi

First thanks for your advice on moving to Penang and I agree that it is best to go and hire a car and look around the Island and search out areas that appeal which is what we shall do. Hopefully we will be able to meet up when we do.

As regards the concern over my user name it is quite simple, nothing to do with me being over 100 or anything military. It is the name of a favourite hymn, "All people that on earth do dwell" and is known as The Old 100, hence the user name. Hope that answers the questions and I have signed off using my name.

Best wishes to all.

David

Old 100th" or "Old Hundredth" is a hymn tune from Pseaumes Octante Trois de David (1551) (the second edition of the Genevan Psalter), and is one of the best known melodies in all Christian musical traditions. The tune is usually attributed to the French composer Loys Bourgeois (c.1510 – c.1560).

Although the tune was first associated with Psalm 134 in the Genevan Psalter, the melody receives its current name from an association with the 100th Psalm, in a paraphrase by William Kethe entitled All People that on Earth do Dwell. The melody is commonly sung with diverse other lyrics as well.

Sounds like a good one! Welcome to the forum.   Car driving in Penang. That is really fun for the newbie, :) :)

Can anyone recommend or know of a company that offers familiarisation visits to Penang.  It would probably be easy enough to hop into a taxi or hire a car, but I would like to have a look inside a couple of the condos, and see maybe some of the areas that the tourists don't go to...

Thanks

Spider

As Penang is so tiny, there are few places that tourists don't venture. Of course, I am speaking for myself and for most tourists.

Some of the tourists' hot spots are of course, George Town, Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah, Gurney Drive and all those recommended sights. Check this link: http://www.tourismpenang.gov.my/

The web site will give you a pretty good idea of places to avoid. Happy Condo hunting!

Spider, Rent a car with a GPS and wander at will. You will never get lost and you will always be directed to where you want to go both visually and verbally. I have been doing that for the past 3 weeks in Penang and I am loving it.
You can also buy a GPS for around RM 800.
Cheers & Beers, JAYDEE

To view some condos just make contact with a property agent in Penang and they'll show you around.

If you get a hire-car you can find some interesting places off the beaten track.  I think it was Stuurman on here who recommended driving down the west coast of Penang which is mostly national park land so not a condo in sight.  You'll still get some crazy driving though.  Here's a pic I took last year of the reservoir near Teluk Bahang.

Great picture, Papaya.

Telok Bahang is one of the place that I wouldn't mind settling in, in Penang. What I would like is to buy a plot of land and build a kampung attap house - my idea of a dream home and a lotus eating lifestyle.  ::)

In reply to Spider seeking a concierge service, I am trying to organize just that sort of facility through the volunteering pages on our website.

I will be adding more information as and when I can get things organized.

Good initiative.  Etherus - your picture looks a little bit strange.  You've not been in an electric storm have you?
