Sorry about that James, I got excited.

So far as memberships are concerned, there is the E&O which we are members at. Membership offers lots of discounts on normal drinks and dining as well as a venue that is relatively up market. At about 450RM a year, it is good value if you use it. I have too  many discount coupons that we cannot use before next Monday when we will renew.

This time we are going in with another couple since you can have an associate that we share the cost and share the coupons while we both obtain a discount card.

The downside is you cannot use the pool nor do they have other facilities to make use of. Still worth it.

Hi James, BB et al,

There is a big difference between the hotel clubs such as Sandy Paradise, E&O and Bayview etc and members clubs such as PSC , CSC and PC. They are just marketing for the hotel and although can be good value they aren't clubs as such and you wouldn't be likely to join in many activities.

With the real clubs you are effectively a joint owner and have a say in the way things are run.

BB just scared the life out of me when she said that sponsors could be liable for the debts of members, then I realised we wont be able to sponsor anyone until our 3 years are up :D

Just a point for our Chinese members, there is a good club in Penang called CRC (Chinese Recreation Club). I have eaten there and its great but they won't allow me to join because I am a Mat Saleh. :(

I thought this was One Malaysia :o

I can't say I blame them as I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would allow me to join.

Wow! James, you better join so we can be best buddies when I moved /visited Penang.........so you can invite me to the club! That is the only chance I will be able visit the club and move amongst the Penang socialites.  O0

We only invite posh people along like CA & Sturrman ;D
Don't just cut and paste, say what you think!

haha Bob, we're safe  ;D it was mentioned in the recent AGM/EGM meetings. It's a safety precaution/reminder for members - to be heeded I think.
We join the P.Royal hotel club for the past 4 yrs because we like the meals there and also stay at the one in BBintang when in KL. But, these past 2 yrs we find we can't manage all those delicious buffets.
BTW HSBC offers good hotel bookings at very competitive rates. We've tried the Gardens in MidValley, slightly more than PRoyal, but if you can chomp down all that breakfast, it's a very good deal.
I thought nowadays they have these Chinese equivalent for Caucasian names (saw them in HK) and black permanent hair colors ^-^
"Posh"  meaning those that have membership potentials, or dressed in long pants and collared shirts...proper skirts n heels ? :D
MrsCulpert....brushup brushup or be happy with CRC ;D

Oh! mate, I stopped being posh when I married an Aussie, started hanging out in barbies wearing rubber thongs, t-shirt and shorts with the inevitable beer in one hand and a snag in the other!!! Dammit, I told Mr C that this is not "Posh" but he declared that this is the way of life in Australia  >:(

BB, looks like I need someone to brush me up. Are you offering? OK with CRC but I am a sticky beak and have a yearning to see how the other half lives!  ;) :)

There is a club called the Golden Maple opposite Wawasan University. My wife is a member (cost 1000RM joining, non redeemable and 340RM per year and it offers me membership as well). We joined primarily for the pool since it is walking distance from where we live. The pool is quite decent. It has a restaurant, bar, a scuba school and tennis courts but would seem to be primarily a casino otherwise. I can't report on that since I have not used that part.

Another club of note is the Penang Club located in behind the Citibank building but on the beachfront. It has all the usual facilities, pool, gym, decent bar, restaurants and it even has rooms for visitors to stay at. The food is mixed and quite good.

I think membership is around 15000RM if you can get one.

PC fees, that is about right. If you are lucky, you may get it slightly cheaper, only slightly. But the club is quite exclusive, and hard to become a member. My brother is a member there. I had stayed there last year. Love it. Has an old colonial charm to the place. Set back from the main road, and peaceful and tranquil to sit at the open air bar listening to the waves and nice sea breeze.

Last Sat night, they had a western and eastern style buffet. For member, only under MYR$40! Including one free bottle of wine. Food was decent. Plenty of food and live entertainment. Unfortunately, only 4 tables! I wonder how the caterer makes money, with so much food and so few customers.

Haha Mrs Culpert, I'm afraid not much help to you. We were mistaken to be Vietnamese refugees by our Taiwanese neighbors by our very casual dresscode and simple lifestyle  ;D All because MrBB likes to wear clothes he feels comfy in and not wear for others, such that he's not interested to attend the 125thAnniversary of E&O in July that says on the bottom of the invitation DressCode: Batik  ::) He says suits I have but why bother to go and buy a Batik for that, we're retired and no need to rub shoulders with the 'posh' ;D
hehe you still want to associate with us 'refugees' who frquent 24hr nasi kandar? ^-^

[Note: no offence to any one with reference of V.refugees above - one of the areas of my work when I worked among refugees incl those from Viet. I've learned alot from many, admire their strengths to rise up with literally nothing in a strange new world].

Clearly I'm not posh as QJumper only mentioned taking CA and Stuurman to the Club  ::)  Well I'm all for slumming it with the BBs at that interesting 24 hour nasi kandar place.  That'll do me nicely  ;)  Not sure I'll get a glass of vino in there though - never mind.

There is Rumah Matsellah which is mentioned above but looking at their website it seems to have tailed off in activity.

Of course there is Penang Expat, also on Facebook, you are welcome to join.

No, there is another monthly BBQ next Saturday 3th of July.

Date:    Saturday, 03 July 2010
Time:    17:00 - 21:00
Location:    Public Beach next to the Flamingo Hotel

Dear Penang MatSallehs,

Please join our next Beach BBQ and drinks with POTLUCK on Saturday, 3rd of July, 2010, 5PM onwards.

As usual, we will do 'PotLuck' .. means that you bring some of your fave food/snacks and drinks .. and we will share them together!...

Bring your own beach chairs if you can't sit on the sand! :D
Beach games are welcome!

We appreciate a donation of RM20 per family for our BBQ man - Henk - who helps us always with the BBQ and makes sure that the space on the beach is available for us.

Hope to see a lot more of you this time!

Cheers!

The link above doesn't work, Sturrman?
Not very clear here: Does it refer to a Caucasian name or skin color or 'Alien' from another country other than MY to qualify to be a Mat Salleh? :-\

Sure Mrs Papaya that'll be the 24hr Nasi Kandar Club ;D
I thought Nasi Kandars are usually run by Moslem Indians...right? ??? Would they allow vino? Don't want to be sent behind bars to have more curries there! :o

Well Penang Sports Club is certainly the club for Mr & Mrs J (assuming Penang wins over Malacca) & I have already made a commitment to invite Papaya, Spider, Cupert & Qjumper as first quests. In fact, it has reciprocal rights to our club in OZ & so should have no trouble using it even on a temporary basis.

Cheers,

James

Looks like the Cuperts will be slumming with the BBs and the Papayas at the 24 hour nasi kandar stall! We will be having such fun fighting over who gets the fish head in the fish head curry!!

What about pouring the vino in the 7 up bottle and saying that it is special cough mixture from Oz or Canada recommended by doctor when eating curries!!  ;D
