Social Clubs-Penang
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:09:57 PM »
Hi Everyone

Does anyone know of any interesting social clubs in Penang worth joining? We'll be moving there in June and it would be great to be able to meet new people once we are settled. The place is great but it's all about the people in the end.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Keith

Hi Keith,

There's a thread (a bit of an old one) in the Penang section of the Forum, which you might want to add to.

http://www.my2home.info/index.php/topic,318.0.html

I might add to that one too.

Not sure if the other topic really addressed your query.  I'm not in Penang yet but, from what I can make out, searching around the internet and facebook, there are plenty of different clubs.  I guess it all depends on your interests/hobbies.

Keep looking around this forum.  You'll see some places recommended on here.  And once you get to 10 postings, you can pester some people on here with PMs.

I don't know if there are any dedicated MM2H Penang groups or gatherings.  If anyone knows one - post here.  It sounds like a good idea - maybe I'll start a facebook group or something after I've moved.

Hi Keith,

As Papaya says it depends on your interests. There are sports, diving, camera, heritage, OAP, shooting, swimming, gym, sailing, martial arts, dancing, karaoke, volunteer, womens, golf and hotel clubs. If there is nothing there to interest you drop me a PM and I will look up some more for you.

Regards

Bob

Thanks Bob.

We are looking initially for social clubs where we can meet people. Living in a great place is ..well..great but a large part of it are the people that you meet.

Appreciate the feedback.

Keith

Hi Keith,

Social clubs may be a bit scarce but interest group clubs abound. For the ladies the IWA seems to be excellent they do lots of good works, have coffee mornings and golf, maybe Stuurman can help with that one.

The PHT are quite interesting, they organise heritage visits and trips every month (nearly).

We are members of PSC and have met quite a few people there.

The most people we have met are via the various activities and social life going on at our condo.

I think if anyone started an MM2H or Expats club (or even Ex Forces) they would be on a winner.

Keep posting and you will be able to use Personal messages. There is no doubt that you will meet lots of people, Penang is like that.

Regards

Bob

Actually there is: Rumah MatSalleh a facebook group for Penang expats.
They organize a beach BBQ tomorrow:
2nd Beach PotLuck & Drinks
Time:Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:00
Location:Public Beach next to the Flamingo Hotel, Tanjung Bungah

It's bring your own drinks and food. I was at the first one and it was fun. Can't make it tomorrow though.
I think it's going to be a monthly recurring event.

Another way to meet people, both local and expats, would be the monthly dinner organized by the Alliance Française de Penang
They are on facebook too.

Rumah MatSalleh have got a little website page too for those not on facebook.  You have to Join Up first they say, though I wonder exactly how they verify if you're one of the Group.  And no Membership Fee  :D so suitable for a cheapskate like me.

Wow, I really didn't know there are so many Expats living in Penang island and mainland. I will keep reading this thread to read about any other social clubs. I have a Tweeter and Facebook account. Guess I should do some Search there for more like minded expats living in Penang.  :)

I am wonderig if this Rumah Mat Salleh group makes a distinction between Mat Salleh and Expats? Locals usually call male caucasian, Mat Salleh. So if you are an expat but of Asian origin, does that mean you cannot join this group?  :o

I joined the group on Facebook but have yet to attend any of their events.  Shall do so after I've moved.  Looking at the pics of the members just now, I'd say it is very mixed racially, like most things in Penang really.  Modern Penang is a melting pot - one of the things I like about it.  Certainly the lady who has formed the group looks of Asian appearance to me, going by her picture.

Mrs Cupert, stop worrying, just join it.  You can do it now and take a look at their facebook page, if you're on Facebook  ;)  Like all things Facebook, you can always drop out later if it's not your cup of tea.  That's the way I look at it anyhow.

Hi Bob,

You mentioned you are members of "PSC" - presumably Penang Sports Club. We were considering that one since it has links to our sporting club in OZ & so will be checking it out in June. We understand it has a sizeable one off joining fee !

Would  appreciate some feedback what its like & what the alternatives are ??

Thanks,

James

It's the Penang Swimming Club.  Full details on this thread.  It's a long thread I'm afraid.

http://www.my2home.info/index.php/topic,318.0.html

I was initially shocked at the price of membership but I'm now learning that there's more to it than I first thought.  Another forum member pointed out about the cheap boating for example.  When I think of all we spent in mooring/marina fees when we had a boat in Phuket  :'(, the PSC is starting to sound like a bargain all of a sudden.

Hi James,

As BB said it is the Penang Swimming Club and they have guest membership agreements with many clubs worldwide.

I must admit that we don't use it as much as we should but there are a wide range of activities. Men, women and kids are all catered for. Examples are teaching sailing to kids, fishing trips, dance lessons, Tai Chee, Scuba etc etc, and of couse swimming but be prepared to be competitive.

If the much vaunted influx of expats to Penang occurrs the high joining fee will look like a good deal as memberships will be as rare as rocking horse droppings. :-\

Best log on to the website but if you have any specific questions ask BB or myself and we will try to answer them.
