Hi Kaz

As I know from experience it's very frustrating to be a victim of crime, I felt humiliated and angry but with hindsight
I'm very glad I suppressed the urge to resist at that moment. Apart from a busted ego and some loss of money
nothing serious happened. I don't believe in guns, they can be used against you as well, but as you I believe in
taking good precautions. Biggest problem now is that I'm slowly losing my over decades build "Amsterdam street wiseness" ;)
Everybody is just to friendly. I don't even get the finger in traffic no matter how stupid I drive with my motorbike. ;D

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of writing a security plan and review for our condo. Just have time on my hands I suppose ;)

You will find that:

Level of crime in Malaysia is relatively low
Level of crime in Penang is lower
Level of crime against expats in Penang is even lower
Level of crime against condo dwellers is even lower

Most condo dwellers suffer from inconvenience and irritation rather than crime, and that is from their neighbours rather outsiders.

I am afraid the most locals view security in a totally different way from Expats. Locals want less intrusive security, expats want good security. Sweeping generalisations but on the whole they are true.

I felt secure in England, I also feel secure here. And considering there are no bobbys on the beat that is amazing.

Bob

A few days ago I received a letter from the police headquarter in KL saying I can go on 2 websites to check if I have outstanding summons etc
Well, the myeg showed 'error' and was not available, got in the rilek one. I entered the data and it searched and boom.....I have a rm200 fine (dated Feb 2010) for speeding near the airport in Nov 2008!! :o
I wrote down the details and immediately off I went to the police station in D. Kramat road, stood in line for 20 mins, showed the officer the letter and the info including the summon number etc. I asked if the websites are scams as I couldn't get in the first one. The kind officer reassured me they are not scams and gave me another website - e.services. She asked me for the downloaded print out copy of the summon, OH, I just hand copied I told her and she said that's not acceptable. She advised me to pay online using one of the working websites.
I'm not sure I can trust the efficiency and reliability of the collection agencies. I think I'll go and stand in line again next week with the print out copy of the summon  ::)

Hi BB,

We got a summons several months ago but it took 5 months to reach us. When I got ther letter it said I could get a 30% reduction if I paid with two weeks (I think) but as it took so long to get to us the reduction was not possible.

I am now registered with MYEG which is a brilliant site, every month I receive a mail to say that I have no outstanding summons. So peace of mind and also big discount in the event of a fine.

This site is way ahead of anything we have in UK. Well done the government (on this occasion anyway!)

There's another 2 post thread on MYEG. Check out : Gov Linked Vehicle Site

The summons alert is a great idea. Of course, some of us drive like angels.  ~2~

I am intrigued.  So your registration number comes up for a driving infringement and you pay a fine

Is it a Automatic Camera System?
Do you know at the time you have committed a infringement?
Are you given a time and place
And what happens if you don't pay?  If it took 5 month to get to you - how long is it before they chase you (and how do they do it)

If you was never informed and then you come to renew your MM2H and they checked that you had outstanding fines over a number of years would that then put your renewal in jeopardy

Cheers

JJ

Great Mr QJumper, I registered with the Myeg site and paid online ... thanks for the confirmation :) Great service!

Yesterday I tried to get online twice at Rilek, but the site was upgrading and I couldn't get in. Got in Myeg this time. In fact the Myeg site said the summon was Rm300  (but since I've not received it) so I gather they gave me a 30% discount and that was Rm200 + Rm2 for the service  ;)

Hi JJ,

My penalty was for a red light offence (the traffic kind not the district). I saw the camera flash me and just waited for the notice to arrive. I have no idea how vigorously they chase up offenders buy like a good boy I paid up when notice arrived.

I was quite shocked that I couldnt get the discount for paying up promptly and was surprised to find that the clock starts ticking on the day of the offence, not when you receive the notice. Just in case I offend again I signed up for MYEG.

I dont know whether it is a totally automated system or do they just have a guy sitting in the camera box writing up the penalties. Its a great system though.

If you dont pay maybe they ban you from logging on to facebook.

thanks for the replies to crime in malaysia. am just trying to compare countries before making a decision.

Just wondering which countries you are comparing?  I'm not yet living in Malaysia but my take (currently) is that it is no better/no worse than most other countries.  Big cities always seem to attract more crime IMO and I suspect KL is no exception.  Though I think most of the time it's a question of just being very careful.  Mirroring QJ's and Stuurman's comments, I've not seen anything untoward in Penang so far, though I am sure there must be some crime of sorts.  In comparison I'm on day 3 in a big city (KL) and saw something quite horrific this morning - I suspect middle of the night attack.  But no different in London.

Hmmmmmmmm! I found this statement rather interesting and inconclusive ".........or getting our heads bashed in while tied up if we were in Australia......."

May I ask what leads you to such a conclusion? May I also suggest that home invasions are mostly carried out by Asian thugs? I have lived in Australia since 1985 and have not often come across such crimes. IMHO, crimes such as bag snatching or home invasions ........from observation......... are carried out by mainly by Asian thugs who target Asian migrants.
