Thanks BB and I guess that's one downside of buying a place out of warranty.

How the heck did we get from Penang Shortcomings to Addressing the Haggis?  Don't you just love going off topic  ;D

The good service will come with time. You have to learn how to talk, approach, and body language. And when to play/not play the angry white guy.
I found it easier to try and establish a relationship with a place and return there. Over time they get to know you. If they know and respect you the service will come.
Malaysian on the whole have treated me with more respect that almost any other country I've been in. In England I'm just another clog in the wheel.

Thank you for your meaningful response.

I was, however, attempting to indicate my previous sojourns and life in Malaysia to the current situation. Therefore, time, as you said, is not the issue...my point is... it used to be better.

Currently, I live in Jakarta, where service is paramount..otherwise; one gets fired!

The service industry is a competetive business model. To be ahead, good management of service is the key.

I simply observed that model, on my latest trip, was lacking.

Thank you
David

Davita,

If you really do plan on living here maybe you should have taken the time and effort to have a decent look around, then you wouldn't have posted your first rant.

The second rant sounds to me you are more pissed off with being charged the $30 for 2 drinks served in a bland hotel rather than the actual service being offered.

Think you should have handed back your MM2H visa when you departed.

Sir,

Thank you for your response.

IMO, your reply to me is rude. However, I notice that you have only made 7 contributions to this forum, and could be a more useful contributor in the future.

Unless you 'respect' positive critical dialogue and debate, perhaps you also should change your name to reflect your new architecture.

Just like Rasa Sayang.

David

If only the govt would cut into the hill sides, reinforce the slopes and widen the road from Tg Bungah to B. Ferringhi. Instead developers are carving in the hills to make new enclaves, but the old narrow winding dangerous main road servicing the expansions remains unchanged. Actually changing for the worse it's deteriorating with washoffs and land slides during monsoon seasons :-(

The road from TB to BF is already crowded on weekends. Sometimes to the point that the road is completely jammed from the floating Mosque until the Hard Rock Hotel. What will happen if all these new developments are finished and occupied one can easy imagine.

Beside the developments there's this theme park coming up in Teluk Bahang!
I just hope with the planned resort, the govt will build an alternate route and improve the Tg Bungah-B.Ferringhi stretch. Just can't imagine what the traffic will be like during the construction period and when that's completed...will they go via Balik Pulau or come along Tg Bungah Rd ?

Sim Leisure To Run Penang's Eco-friendly Theme Park

PENANG, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has selected Sim Leisure Consultants Sdn Bhd to run the RM120 million eco-friendly "Ecofun Theme Park Resort" project in Teluk Bahang.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the project, which was expected to boost the state's tourism industry, would be built on the 12.5 hectares belonging to the Penang Water Corp (PBA).

"If all goes well, we hope to finalise the project before Chinese New Year so that work can start, the latest by second quarter of this year," he told reporters after meeting representatives from Bahrain-based Gulf Finance House and Sim Leisure here Tuesday.

Lim said PBA selected Penang-based Sim Leisure through open tender.

The company was involved in the design and construction of the Universal Studios Theme Park in Singapore.

He said GFH has also shown a keen interest in the venture.

GFH executive director, Andrew Payne, said the company had work together with Sim Leisure to set up theme parks like the Wahoo Waterpark in Bahrain.

"We are here today to see the size of project and its proposal before making any decision to invest here," he said.

Meanwhile, Sim Leisure managing director, Sim Choo Kheng, said the theme park would have five components.

"There will be a fun hotel, water park, active park, animal farm and jungle adventure to ensure that visitors come and embrace the beauty of nature," he said, adding that Sim Leisure's intention was not destroy nature but to utilise and harness its beauty.

End of News.

I was looking around the 'net recently at various possible rental places and saw Scotland Villas which overlooks the Turf Club - wow, really nice, but the rental prices looked pretty steep.  I guess you get what you pay for.  There's some pics here.

Though, as an English person, I could not possibly live there  ;)  But hey might do nicely for Davita (and Jumping Jack and Djoerk - he he)

Scotland Villa might be too expensive for you but, you may try looking at low-rise apartments within the same precinct on Codrington Avenue -  a good alternative to popular Tanjung Bungah.   It’s in a quiet neighbourhood.  Location wise, it’s about 20 minutes walk or 5 mins drive away from Island Hospital, 5 minutes walk to busy Burma Road where Bus 101 plies, 10 minutes walk to nearby eateries and Pulau Tikus Wet Market on Moulmein Close,  or 20 minutes walk to Gurney Drive.   :) :)

Here is the link to give you an idea of how Codrington Avenue looks like :

Thanks Costa.  It looks like an interesting area but those units would be too small for us and think we'd want something a bit higher.  We've got a few ideas but don't have a move date yet anyway unfortunately.

Re: Penang Shortcomings - Georgetown Jln Magazine & Traders Hotel
« Reply #43 on: February 03, 2010, 04:17:54 PM »
Live from Penang  :) At least the internet is working, but here's some shortcomings.  Georgetown has some very nice areas, and some nice historic buildings, and some rather grim areas too.  Where we are staying Traders/Jalan Magazine, falls into the latter category.  No decent eateries in walking distance so you're stuck with the hotel.  Traders seems to be a ripoff hotel and they just never seem to stop trying and it gets very wearing when you've had no sleep for 2 nights due to the hotel being opposite a late night "club" with thumpety-thump muzak from midnight to about 7 am.  So any folks thinking about Traders - don't bother.  <hey I'm starting to sound like Davita> regards Tired in Penang

Good to get some on the ground reporting - maybe a separate thread so we can follow your observations

Hope it picks up for you

Cheers
