Thanks everyone for the comments.

Maybe I was a bit harsh. I couldn't sleep last night and made my remarks when I was a little dazed.

I thought it might be too many cocktails  :D  Seriously, it wasn't that bad a rant actually.  Have a safe trip back "home".

If you can, you should take a look at both locations because KL and Penang are very, very different places.
Indeed, doing both in the forthcoming trip, and compiling lists of KL condos by stations as we speak.  Hard work, informational overload.

He! he! he! Methinks the cocktails (Cabernet Sauvignon, actually) had worn OFF.
Cocktails make me giggle.....and unabel ta speil..

The rant was caused by the beginning of the hangover.   >:(

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Maybe I was a bit harsh. I couldn't sleep last night and made my remarks when I was a little dazed.

The taxi ride from B.F. to the airport this morning gave me the opportunity to see the nicer looking apartments in Tanjong Bungah. I thought that area looked more interesting.

We also passed by the Turf Club area and I could see the nice Colonial style houses.

My friend from Hong Kong intends to live in Penang so we will visit again and have a better look-see.

I agree that we did not spend enough time looking around with an experienced Penangite. Next time.

David

Hi David,

Ya, Turf Club precinct is an area worth checking out.  The area is much quieter and environed by greenery but you have to rely fully on personal vehicle to get around as public transport in that area almost doesn't exist.  Most houses there are landed properties but you still can find low rise apartments not more than 5-storey high on Cantonment Road and Codrington Avenue.

Have a safe trip back home!! :) :) :)

though I hear that the suburbs are much nicer - and you might like.

Agreed.  Petaling Jaya is nice and it's totally different from KL although it's just a short ride away.  Worth checking out!   :) :)

Hi Papaya,
"snap" I don't like KL city centre, its alright for shopping but for a more relaxed life style and yet closed to all amenities in Penang is the place.

Again, thank you all for comments..... particularly Costa...who articulated a defining area.

I have already recognized my need to return and have a 'Penangite' show me around to enlarge my experience.
However, may I offer something from my own experience and worldly perview; considered from my perception over the last week.
IMO... Service attitude in Malaysia generally 'SUX!'

I saw nothing that can be attributed to the professional international service level. The Hotel Nikko, where we stayed for 3 nights, had a Taiwanese trainee who had more service orientation than ALL the Malaysians that I have met.

Where are the managers of those supposed 5 stars...where do they get the friggin stars from?

We went to Rasa Sayang a few days ago....I first stayed there in 1974 shortly after it opened.
My wife and I stayed there a couple of times sometime in the late '80s.
It has always been our dream to return.

Two days ago we re-visited the Rasa Sayang lobby bar and had 2 vodka/tonics. The service was just OK..the price was US$30.

We looked around this previous Malay-Ethnic styled Hotel and felt..... 'Bland'.

The new architecture of Rasa Sayang could be like the Hyatt in Bostsn, MA. I assuredly do not wish to decry the Hyatt, but I regret the Rasa Sayang.

From now on that name.... 'Rasa Sayang'.... has no imagery...best rename it!

The good service will come with time. You have to learn how to talk, approach, and body language. And when to play/not play the angry white guy.
I found it easier to try and establish a relationship with a place and return there. Over time they get to know you. If they know and respect you the service will come.
Malaysian on the whole have treated me with more respect that almost any other country I've been in. In England I'm just another clog in the wheel.

Davita,

If you really do plan on living here maybe you should have taken the time and effort to have a decent look around, then you wouldn't have posted your first rant.

The second rant sounds to me you are more pissed off with being charged the $30 for 2 drinks served in a bland hotel rather than the actual service being offered.

Think you should have handed back your MM2H visa when you departed.

I have to agree with Davita about Rasa Sayang hotel.
We were shown around the place as we were asking for a quote for a big reunion for 100 people.
Was not impressed with the surroundings, its as quiet as a morgue, none of the guest spoke, too snobby or too frighten to disturb the silence ?

Checking out several of the rail lines as they go thru the various suburbs reveals more condos near stations than one can shake a stick at.  It seems the trick is to just go outside the central area.  This is very encouraging.

I was looking around the 'net recently at various possible rental places and saw Scotland Villas which overlooks the Turf Club - wow, really nice, but the rental prices looked pretty steep.  I guess you get what you pay for.  There's some pics here.

Though, as an English person, I could not possibly live there  ;)  But hey might do nicely for Davita (and Jumping Jack and Djoerk - he he)

And yes a bit pricey but you have to pay a premium to have the right neighbours   ~2funny

Address to the haggis

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin' race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm - reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade.
He'll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow`rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, If ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

Translation

Fair and full is your honest, jolly face,
Great chieftain of the sausage race!
Above them all you take your place,
Stomach, tripe, or intestines:
Well are you worthy of a grace
As long as my arm.

The groaning trencher there you fill,
Your buttocks like a distant hill,
Your pin would help to mend a mill
In time of need,
While through your pores the dews distill
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour wipe,
And cut you up with ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like any ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm steaming, rich!

Then spoon for spoon, the stretch and strive:
Devil take the hindmost, on they drive,
Till all their well swollen bellies by-and-by
Are bent like drums;
Then old head of the table, most like to burst,
'The grace!' hums.

Is there that over his French ragout,
Or olio that would sicken a sow,
Or fricassee would make her vomit
With perfect disgust,
Looks down with sneering, scornful view
On such a dinner?

Poor devil! see him over his trash,
As feeble as a withered rush,
His thin legs a good whip-lash,
His fist a nut;
Through bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit.

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his ample fist a blade,
He'll make it whistle;
And legs, and arms, and heads will cut off
Like the heads of thistles.

You powers, who make mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill of fare,
Old Scotland wants no watery stuff,
That splashes in small wooden dishes;
But if you wish her grateful prayer,
Give her [Scotland] a Haggis!
Out of the frying pan and into the ...........

A family we know lives there. Have been having leaking problems. First it was the balcony and now they are not sure if it's the kitchen or which bathrooms/toilets or pipes that are leaking into the floor ie the ceiling below them. According to their strata agreement the floor above is responsible for repairs of damp ceiling immediately below.
The floors, bathrooms, toilets and pipes are all original, but with warranty period over they have to pay for the long drawn out repairs and trying to pin point where the leaks come from!!
