Georgetown eateries recommendations - close to Komtar
« on: January 19, 2010, 02:04:43 PM »
We'll be staying close to Komtar on the next trip (Traders Hotel).  I know Georgetown is noted for its eateries  :D so has anyone got any recommendations for any nice little eateries, not too frantic, just good food (any kind), good atmosphere and preferably a glug of something available too, within walking distance of Komtar?

Hi

The Foodcourt in Komtar offers some great chandol and other reasonable eateries. However, if you like nasi kandar and/or roti canai, I can suggest Craven A Cafe, 4 Jalan Dato Keramat, opposite komtar. Here is a link to some good eateries http://kampungboycitygal.com/2009/11/penang-food-list/

As for good atmosphere, I guess high end restaurants are the ones to go for. This link has some http://www.what2seeonline.com/

cheers

Craven Cafe sounds good and looks like it's a short stagger from Traders.  Will definitely give that one a try.  Won Ton noodles and veggies - might give that a go too.  I guess there will be a lot of choice in Georgetown  :P

Cheers Paddy.  Neither of us interested in sweets, but Indian food - yup we'll have that.

Slightly digressing but you mentioned Vietnam.  I went to HCMC once and didn't like the place or the food.  Maybe we went to the wrong bit.

Hi Papaya or Du Du as you would be known as in VN, have you seen VN film "The scent of Green Papaya" quite good look at well to do family life in Ho early 50's but mostly filmed on set in Paris!

Lots of good very eateries in Ho and VN at reasonable cost too, lunch today in District1  5 mins away from British USA and French embassy's to name a very few of the 2 or 3 dozen close by, we had leg of chicken  a bitter gourd veggie stuffed with pork 3 lots of veggies soup and 2 portions of rice cost was 45,000VnD or £1-50 in real money, nice little street side cafe full of all the local office staff always good sign to look for lots of locals.

The traffic and pollution disgusting in Ho getting increasingly worse ie 100+ new registrations for cars and 1000+ motorcycles every day, gravely underestimated by official sources I am sure. You will see a lot of Indian eateries around Georgetown painted Green and Yellow I forget the name but excellent eats at very modest cost.

Ah so you are back in VN again  ;)  Yes the traffic and pollution was pretty bad when we went there - and trying to cross the road on foot, forget it.  But I guess like so many places, there are good bits when you know where to look.
